WHO D'ART!

September 21,  Noon to 3 p.m. Mardi Gras World
Hundreds of local youths will celebrate the start of Saints football on Saturday, September 21 in a creative way at “Who D’Art,” a new art empowerment program. The free art workshop was started by New Orleans Attorney Juan Lafonta as a way to educate and empower underserved youth about art and expression. Lafonta is partnering with celebrated local artist Richard C. Thomas  and  Mr. Mardi Gras, Blaine Kern, to hold an instructive art lesson for 500 kids who will be challenged to add their personal designs and imagery to fleur de lis and umbrellas.   Prizes and giveaways will be awarded throughout the program, as well as tours of Mardi Gras World.

Students from several Orleans parish schools are already registered to participate but there are still 100 opening available for the general public.  Parents of kids ages 10 to 16 can register to attend with their child by calling 504-288-4911.  Transportation is being provided for all participants. Registration is mandatory due to limited availability.

“Who D’Art is for those kids in New Orleans who might never get an opportunity to take an art lesson from our city’s talented artists who grew up here and went on to wonderful careers in art,” Lafonta said. “It will allow kids to have a constructive outlet for self-expression as they deal with the difficulties life presents. I know Who D’Art  is going set off some light bulbs inside the minds of many kids and it is my hope we can encourage them to follow their passion and pursue careers in art.”

All art supplies will be provided free of charge.  Lunch will also be provided by Central BBQ at no cost.
